Sharing Our Empathy Stories

Year 4, 5 and 6 read their own empathy stories to the Year 2 and 3s. Every story had a message about having empathy for others and Year 2 and 3 enjoyed learning from their peers the importance of understanding others.

Sapphire Class – 3D Shapes

In Sapphire Class, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We built a range of 3D shapes using Polydron, including hexahedrons, dodecahedrons and octahedrons! We talked about how many faces, vertices and edges the shapes have.

Sapphire Class – Fiction and Non-Fiction

This week, we have been learning about the features of fiction and non-fiction books. As reading detectives, we looked for clues to help us sort the books into groups. Some of the books were really tricky to work out like the book about fossils that looked like a story book! We came up with a table of clues to help us work out if a book was fiction or non-fiction.

Forest Schools – History Focus

This week in forest schools we had a fire. We discussed how we keep safe near an open fire and added these to our forest school rules. We looked at how fires are lit today and how Stone Age man would have lit their fires, and what they were used for. We also made charcoal by burning oak sticks in a tin to reduce the amount of oxygen.

At the end of the session, we had the choice of making ‘wood cookie’ name labels to wear in our forest school lessons or playing ‘meet a tree’, where we were led blind folded to a tree, felt all around it then saw if we could recognise it when our blind folds were removed.

Forest Schools – Science Focus

Today saw the start of our forest school’s session. We revisited our safety rules and played the tennis ball game to enhance our listening skills. This week we learned how bees collect honey. Running to collect water with a pipette, we emulated how bees fly back and forth to gather nectar. At the end of the session, we had a choice of looking for wasp galls or creating a ‘nature crown’ with string and items we gathered.

Share a Story Session

The class enjoyed their ‘share a story’ session so much that they have decided to hold a weekly share a story session. This week they shared their dinosaur stories. Keep checking the website to see what they share next.

Sharing our Stories

Some pupils chose to spend their lunch play reading and sharing their story openers with each other. We were gripped listening to them and can’t wait to hear what happens next.

Stone-Age Story Opener

In English, we have started to read ‘Wolf Brother’ by Michelle Paver. We studied and learned the features of an opening chapter then used what we had learned to write our own opening to a Stone-Age story. Keep looking at the website as we will write the rest of the story later in the team.

Spellings

Every Friday is ‘spellings’ in Diamond Class and on the first Friday back, we were all revising spelling rules from the previous year.

Our Values

Year 5/6 started the term thinking about their personal values. They asked philosophical questions then debate their responses positioning themselves on a line. It really made us think about what we believe!
